Make a Gift: El Paso-Mexico Service Immersion Trip
We would like to ask you to partner with us to make a difference in our world. A group of Detroit Mercy students will travel on a service immersion trip to El Paso, TX from May 2–7 through University Ministry. This year marks the 30th year of sending students on these experiences.
This program allows us to experience a community outside our own, learn about the issues that contribute to poverty, violence and injustice, and serve communities in need. Students step beyond their comfort zones to see the realities of our world through the eyes of the individuals and communities we serve alongside. These trips are transformative and help form us as reflective leaders while we build meaningful relationships beyond Detroit.
At the El Paso–Mexico border, we will serve people who have traveled many miles, often escaping violence in their home countries, poverty, domestic abuse or lack of access to basic needs like healthcare. While there, we will meet with key individuals in the U.S. immigration system, including immigration lawyers, former DHS employees and those serving in migrant shelters. Our goal is to better understand the complexities of the system while bearing witness to the stories we hear.
During this trip, we will live out acts of mercy by preparing care packages for migrants. We will visit those who are imprisoned by listening to the stories of individuals in a U.S. detention center. We will sit with those who are suffering and be present to our sisters and brothers in their moment of need.
I invite you to support this experience with a gift of any amount. Your generosity will help cover travel, lodging and program costs, making it possible for our students to take part in this life changing opportunity. If you are able to give, please know that you are directly supporting both our formation as leaders and the communities we will serve. Thank you for considering this request and for being part of the impact we hope to make.
